Strengths and weaknesses - 5 tips

  1. Don’t forget her talents! The professionals working with your child see her autism symptoms. You see her as a person with many strengths and talents. Her autism is not what she is. It’s what she has.

  2. From a young age, because of her diagnosis, your child has constantly been trained, corrected, sometimes scolded. Her talents are a way to boost her confidence.

  3. You will notice that at the school, her talents are overlooked. It’s because the school is not built for them. It’s on you to develop them.

  4. Learn to delight in your child’s talents, even if they are quirky. If your child learned all the world’s flags at the age of five, appreciate it, compliment her. Most importantly, note to yourself: if she can do this, she can do everything she needs.

  5. Since she was little, your child has been working five times harder than a “typical” kid her age. That has taught her work ethics and stamina that will prove extremely useful in the long run. Likewise, she has been learning to constantly autocorrect herself. That will give her awareness and sensitivity to other people her “typical” peers won’t have. The “ugly duckling” will blossom into a beautiful swan.
